Mavis Grain Farm, Edgerton, OH, Maumee River Valley - Wednesday, May 14th, 2014

Tom explaining operation of corn planter.

Mavis Farm grain storage.

Scott Mavis explaining how he improves the placement of corn seeds in the ground at planting
by making custom modifications to planters.  This is a side business that Gary has developed for
more income in the winter. Farmers are looking for every edge to improve yield.

Today we visited Mavis Farms located in Ohio. The farm is owned by father, Gary Mavis, and son, Scott Mavis. The farm has been in the family for four generations and started as dairy farm and then a 600-acre hog farm. Today, the farm is a 3,500-acre grain operation and specializes in growing corn and soybeans.  The Mavis’ were gracious and showed us their grain storage operation, 16-row planter, semi-tractor nurse trailer for applying pesticides and liquid fertilizer, Scott’s improved seed placement business, and they discussed the ins and outs of their farming operation.
