U.S. Agricultural Production Systems

Six students and two professors on the road from Connecticut to Wyoming in a 12-passenger van for 20 days to learn how grain and livestock are produced. We visited farmers and operators of farm support businesses who cooperate to produce a small piece of the 220 million acres of grain in the US, and a small piece of the beef, pork, milk and chickens. Bridgewater Dairy Farm, Montpelier, OH. Maumee River Valley - Wednesday, May 14th, 2014

Pictures are not allowed inside the Bridgewater Dairy, so we posed on the outside.

Dr. Leon Weaver, a veterinarian originally from Lancaster County, PA and from California, spoke to us about the 5,000 head dairy he operates with his wife and son. He gave us insight into the intricacies of the dairy industry, and the in-and-outs of selling commodities vs specialty products. We visited inside the milking parlor, and learned about the logistics of handling a herd of such great size. It was really interesting to learn more about the management skills necessary to produce milk from 5,000 cows. Learning about the business side of dairy production was an unexpected lesson from this stop in Ohio!
